The call of Britain’s shores

The 1862 International Exhibition held in London gave Loppé a chance to explore the British capital. He returned to exhibit there later with a desire to win over the many mountain landscape lovers among the city’s residents.

The painter’s marriage to Elizabeth Eccles in 1879 increased the frequency of his trips across the Channel. The couple stayed in Wales and near Liverpool, where the Eccles family originated. Another favourite holiday destination, Scotland offered wonderful environments for Loppé to experiment with his art: the capricious weather and violent storms produced intense chromatic variations that he translated onto the canvas. He experienced similar sensations to those he had felt in the Alps in the presence of pristine nature.
